Author(s) | Teresa Maria de Jesus |
---|---|
Addressee(s) | Josefa Maria do Espírito Santo |
In English | Private letter from Teresa Vicência de Jesus Maria, pseudonym of Teresa Maria de Jesus, to Josefa Maria do Espírito Santo. The author tells the recipient that she is in great distress because she does not have with whom to confess. The defendant in this process is the young Teresa Maria de Jesus, also known as Teresa Vicência de Jesus Maria, arrested by the Inquisition in November 6, 1738, for she pretended to have visions and revelations. Seven of her letters written to two nuns are included in the process, as evidence of her guilt. She was condemned to be publicly flogged and to spend five years in Évora, and also forbidden of ever going back to Porto, Braga or Viana do Castelo. |
