Addressee(s) | Gaspar de Passos Figueiroa |
In English | Scolding letter sent by Nuno de Passos to his brother, Gaspar de Passos Figueiroa, a bishop's bailiff The author reveals how alarmed he is to hear his brother has been sentenced to the exile. He scolds him on not sending news to his anxious family. Gaspar de Passos Figueiroa, a bishop's bailiff, was arrested by the Inquisition under the accusation of receiving bribes from some New-Christians he was supposed to arrest, allowing them to flee instead. He was also accused of contacting his own family by letter when he was already in prison; indeed, the Inquisition prisoners were not allowed to reveal "the Saint Office's secret". |
