Letter from Juan Ximénez Llamas, a presbyter from Belmonte, to Juan Manuel de Alcantud, a barefoot Franciscan.

The author informs Juan Manuel de Alcantud that he has received his letter through a friend and he lets the addressee know he will fulfil his errands. He reports on a letter received from the Governor and he has rushed his answer. He also tells him he has been trying to maintain the order and avoid the noise in church.

Following an accusation for «alumbrados» against María Isabel Herráiz, the Blessed of Villar del Águila, a trial took place between 1802 and 1808. The trial broadened to include many other people accused of being complicit in her delusions. Maria Isabel Herráiz believed that Jesus Christ was within her and, as a result, she would not take communion. Some of the other accused stated that they could see Jesus as a child appearing on her chest. When she renounced the faith she admitted her mistakes. All the signs, visions and revelations she had received as true and given by God, were the work of an evil spirit. She also blamed this evil spirit for tricking her into believing that the Lord had materialized in her body in order to accomplish an overall reformation and to establish a new apostleship. She declared she had to die in Rome and ascend into heaven three days afterwards, and these facts were announced in the Apocalypse and other sacred books. Maria Isabel Herráiz also argued that the Devil was to blame for all these thoughts, since her imagination had been transformed and warmed by him. She admitted that her accomplices were looked for and incited by her. In her statement, she argued that she did not make a pact with the Devil, but she was possessed by him. Furthermore, she admitted to allowing worship of herself, although she insisted it was all a diabolical artifice. According to her, she was blameless regarding the uproar in the village. Apparently there were disturbances among her followers, the «endiablados». On the upper margin of folio 16r there is an annotation that reads: "from Llamas to Alcantud".

Mi estimado Amigo P Lector: Recibo la de Vm por mano de nro Amigo Francisco, el qe llegó sin novedad particular con su Compañero Dn Atanasio: Quedo enterado de quanto Vm me dize en la Suya, y lo practicaré assi como Vm me lo encarga. Apenas havrian llegado a Palomares quando iban a essa, quando me traxeron las Cartas del Correo, una de ellas erá del Sr Governador, Cuya Copia incluyó, con ella me acabo de apurar mas de lo qe estaba, tanto qe para evi-tar los Ruidos en la Yglesia, y temiendome lo qe podría suceder a otro Dia Fiesta de Sn Sebastian (que vinieron muchas Gentes a Ver estas cosas) mande a las endiabladas no fuesen a la Yglesia, y a unos qe havia en la puerta con luzes esperando para acompañarla a la Yglesia, qe las apagasen: Pues desde aquella hora no pudó ir a la Yglesia en toda la Semana y sintió la mano derecha como atada, y adormecida, resultandole unos Dolores, como si le passarán la mano con un Clavo: Cerciorado de esto el Dia qe vino Franco qe fué el Sabado, y en Vista de la de Vm les levanté el Mandato a las dichas, y lo mismo en orden a el alumbrado. Con esto pudó ir a otro Dia a la Yglesia, y las Gentes siguieron, y siguen con su todos los Dias alumbrando ec. He repetido Segunda Suplica al Sr Govor qe llevó Dn Atanasio, y Con este dispusimos se fuesse la Manuela, para qe alli la examinen, y Vean aquellos SS No hemos tenido razon desde qe se fueron. Es mucha la sensacion, qe causan por todas partes todas estas Cosas, y es mucho tambien lo qe mienten, dizen por aquí qe Vm ha dexado la la Beata ec.
