Addressee(s) | Joan de la Comba |
In English | Letter from Manuel Gómez Rendón to Joan de la Comba, an herbalist. The author writes to his friend Joan to ask him a herb to cure a wound his wife has in her arm. In 1636, Joan de la Comba, a French herbalist, was accused of witchcraft by the Inquisition for having made a spell, together with Juan Leonés, to find a treasure. Joan de la Comba tried to defend himself claiming that he did not know anything about spells, and that it had been Juan Leonés who said him how to do it and insisted on it. This letter is not mentioned in the proceedings, it is only registered that it was found when Joan was searched, before being imprisoned. The accused was eventually found guilty of witchcraft. |
