Letter from Francisco Bernardo Quirós, a bricklayer, to Ángela Esteban, a beggar.

The author gives instructions to Ángela Esteban on how she must proceed for getting him released from prison so that he can fulfil his promise of marrying her.

In 1780 Francisco Bernardo Quirós was tried for vagrancy and for being in a de facto relationship. He was married to Teresa Espinosa and worked occasionally as a bricklayer, he had lived in several cities. In 1778 he left Madrid and during his trip he had a de facto relationship with a woman named Teresa Calleja. After that he went to Valladolid, were he worked at marques de Canillejas´ house. He started then a relationship with Ángela Esteban, to whom he hid he was married and promised to marry her. However, Ángela soon discovered the lie when she received a letter addressed to Francisco from his wife. Ángela Esteban presented this letter before the Tribunal together with two other letters that Francisco Bernardo Quirós had handed her in prison. When the judges showed him these letters, he assured that Ángela made him write them. Regarding his wife´s letter, he admitted it was hers and defended himself of the accusation of vagrancy by alleging that if he had not come back it was due to the lack of resources. Eventually, the defendant was condemned to either eight years´ service in the Army or in the Navy or four years´ imprisonment in an African jail, in the event he was not fit for the service.

Anjela luego qe rezivas esta te enteraras de su contenido y pa no herarla te valdras de un Avogado de tu satisfaczion: A quien le expresaras como he estado en ÔBiedo preso la causa fue una muxer y pa separarme de esta me preziso el gastar muchos rrs y lograr en dha ôcasion de un yndulto y desde alli vine ha esta en donde me he mantenido travajando como tu saves respecto que en esta ay suxetos qe declaren como io estuve preso en OBiedo y el porqe y para livertarme qe me destinen tal vez A un presidio y pa livertarme de semexante travaxo es preziso el qe sin detenerte logres el mexor exito pa qe se logre el qe no se escriva contra mi ni una letra, en la intelixencia qe me e de casar contigo: y pa mexor hazertarlo aras qe venga ha esta Carzel el avogado, de tu satisfaccion pues este me desengañara y hara quanto sea davle pa este caso pues io le pagare su travaxo: y por si acaso vienen ha tomarme declarazion diras a el Avogado qe declarazion espresare y para mejor azertar qe te ponga por escrito la declarazion qe tengo de azer yras ha casa de el taonero de San Benito y preguntaras si a vido Carta pa qe se me entreguen aquellos quinientos reales qe tiene pa mi en su poder y si acaso uviese venido me avisaras pa darte rezivo de el dho dinero. de todo qto te espreso no te descuides pues en la causa qe me van a formar me quieren poner por vago siendo todo falso pues yo justificare a el contrario y me costara sin duda algunos reales. aras dilixencias de saver quien es el rezeptor qe actua en la causa pa saver los testigos qe an declarado contra mi. pues el Juez es el Sor Oliver. espero respuesta sin falta si puede ser en el dia Dios te gue ms as y manda a este sego servr franco Bernardo Quiros
