1545. Carta de Juan Méndez para Antón de Cogollos.

Author(s) Juan Mendez
Addressee(s) Antón de Cogollos
In English

Letter from Juan Méndez to Antón de Cogollos.

The author protests for the insinuations about his wrongdoing regarding Juan de Salamanca´s testament and he justifies his actions by giving detailed information about his management in this matter.

In 1547 Antón de Cogollos, a resident of Fontiveros, sued Juan Méndez and Diego de Azamar, both residents of Coatzacoalcos (or city of Espíritu Santo), for Juan de Salamanca´s inheritance. The decedent had lived in Coatzacoalcos and designated Antón de Salamanca as his only heir. The executors of the will were Juan and Diego and they were accused of retaining Juan de Salamanca´s goods, consisting in approximately three thousand gold pesos. Antón de Cogollos presented three letters written by Juan Méndez in which he admitted he had the money. The litigation was pending for considering the provisor of Avila was incapable for the decision taking.
