In English

Justification letter sent by André Coelho, the captain of the Aguada fort in Goa, to Dom Francisco da Gama, the 4th Count of Vidigueira, a former Viceroy of India

The author justifies his lack of reports on the grounds of the difficult mission he has as a fortress captain.

The captain André Coelho, the letter's author, went to India in 1611 and served there for many years. Since 1612 he was made captain of Goa's Aguada Fort. In 1621 he wrote a Report on the Dutch fortresses, prisons and commercial establishments ("feitorias"). In 1634 he traded with the Dutch an exchange of prisoners. He also fought constantly in the conquests of India. Dom Francisco da Gama, the letter's addressee, was the Viceroy of India in two periods (1597-1600, 1622-1628). By the end of his life he fell into disgrace regarding the king, Filipe III. He died in Oropesa in 1632, so he never got the letter, which was written one year after.
