In English | Request letter from Miguel de Sousa, a knight who was also a merchant, to his wife, Isabel da Costa. The author tells his wife that he has been ill an owes some favors to the relatives and friends who helped him, so he asks her to send him butter, pork meat and ham for him to repay them. He longs for her company and hopes he will join her soon, although he is in Lisbon and she in Bragança, in Northeastern Portugal. Miguel de Sousa was arrested in 1593 as a suspect of Judaism. Two years earlier he had written from Lisbon to Bragança to his wife, but the carrier, who was also arrested for Judaism in mid-way, in Coimbra, had all his belongings confiscated. |
