In English | Family letter from Henriques Pereira Tenório, a merchant, to his nephew Afonso Fidalgo, also a merchant. The auhtor writes his nephew to give him news about their family and their business. Afonso Fidalgo, a merchant in Olinda de Pernambuco, was accused of Judaism during the visit of the Holy Office to Brazil. He was arrested by the "visitador" Heitor Furtado de Mendonça in July 1595 and was sent to prison in Lisbon. This letter was sent only after his encarceration: at the end of the letter we can read the following statement: "Being Afonso Fidalgo in prison, this letter arrived for him and I added it here, as it can be seen." |
