In English | Letter from Josefa Arceo de Velasco to her cousin Ana Josefa Gómez. Josefa Arceo de Velasco writes to her cousin Ana Josefa Gómez about the final price of the sale of a mare. This lawsuit was brought in 1813 by Andrés Marcelino Gómez de Castro, resident in Santiago de Tabeirós (Pontevedra) against Josefa Arceo de Velasco, resident in Santiago de Compostela, about the sale of a mare. Josefa Arceo de Velasco had sold a pregnant mare to his uncle, Andrés Marcelino Gómez de Castro, for the amount of 1,500 maravedís. The mare gave birth to a mule and Josefa Arceo de Velasco demanded both animals back, by returning 1,500 maravedís. Andrés Marcelino Gómez de Castro refused to give back the animals and sued Josefa Arceo de Velasco. The defendant claimed that she had never intended to sell the mare, but only to lend it to his uncle for a while. The letter transcribed here was provided by the applicant to show that his niece intended to sell the animal, and not to lend it. |
