Addressee(s) | António das Chagas |
In English | Advice letter from [António Ribeiro de Abreu], an Inquisitor, to friar António das Chagas, a priest. The author advises the addressee on how to behave on a case of exorcism. A servant in the place of Felgueiras, in Northern Portugal, was accused of making a pact with the Devil. The witnesses who testified against her believed that she appeared to them in the company of a well dressed young man (the Devil in disguise). Later, they would forget all about it and only remember through the Catholic confession and communion. They believed to have been enchanted, made invisible and forgetful while they would have illicit sexual intercourse with other people. |
