In English | Request letter from Frei António da Piedade, to a non identified addressee, a member of the Coimbra Inquisition. The author asks the advice of the addressee concerning a secret that a nun has told him. He is not sure whether or not she should report it officially to the Inquisition, so he asks him first. One other nun, apparently, had put a small piece of written paper near a dying companion. There remains the question about the gesture being superstitious or not. The Inquisition archives contain, apart from the around 40 thousand individual proceedings ("processos"), a collection of scattered charges, for which the Inquisition "Promotor" had to decide whether or not to prosecute. Complaints, confessions, letters by the commissioners or about different stages of each proceedings are some of the document types that can be found in these books. This letter has been kept among such documentation. |
