Author(s) | António das Chagas |
---|---|
Addressee(s) | António Ribeiro de Abreu |
In English | News letter from friar António das Chagas, a priest, to an Inquisitor of Coimbra, probably António Ribeiro de Abreu. The author tells the addressee where he has been preaching and confessing and where he is intending to proceed. He comments on the several cases of pact with the devil that he is founding. A servant in the place of Felgueiras, in Northern Portugal, was accused of making a pact with the Devil. The witnesses who testified against her believed that she appeared to them in the company of a well dressed young man (the Devil in disguise). Later, they would forget all about it and only remember through the Catholic confession and communion. They believed to have been enchanted, made invisible and forgetful while they would have illicit sexual intercourse with other people. |
