Unsigned letter from Bartolomé José de Ocampo y Mata, the bishop of Plasencia, to José Durán de Hinojal

The author gives instructions to José Durán de Hinojal for him to conduct himself regarding the facts he has asked in a previous letter.

In 1704, José Gregorio de Rojas, the new bishop of Plasencia, sued the executor of the former bishop´s properties. He wanted him to bear the costs from the reparations of the bishopric´s houses and palaces. Several buildings from the Episcopal dignity located in Plasencia, Béjar, Piornal and Jaraicejo; were in a dilapidated condition. These problems were not new, in 1692 a similar lawsuit had been lodged and it was rendered void. A thorough examination was commissioned by the new bishop in order to determine the state of the different palaces and houses, as well as the former bishop´s management for all these matters. In the inquiry carried out regarding Jaraicejo´s buildings, one of the witnesses, José Durán Hinojal, presented several letters which proved the deceased bishop´s attempts to do the essential repairs.

Rvo su carta de Vm de 15 estimado a Vm muchisimo el cuydado q por mi toma en todo y deseo a Vm buena salud y sin mus calores q aca aunq la cassa es vastante, el sol haze de oficio.

A las Ates respondo en esa carta con gran cariño en lo q se ofreze y con claridad lo q toca a la Novizia q si ella se esta enferma y es enfermiza la mantengan por aora y vayan avisando q aunq veo carga todo esto, sobre la Me Liaga y q es lastima no inclino hasta asegurarnos mucho de la salud a poner esa carga perpetua al Convto por la Me Dorotea.

Embio la liza para la disposizion de la Me Maria Franca de la Conzepcion, Vm se la dara y la dira lo hago con gran gusto por su alivio.

Aviendome Vm hecho mucha merd en el reconozimto del Palazio, buelvo a Vm la relazion de lo q se nezesita prq no se dize en essa palabra de lo q se considera q puede costar, y assi Vera Vm lo q dize el Mro de materiales y Jornales, q de la madera Yo me encargare, y la teja piedra y ladrillo Vms alla aunq ello y el Carpintero esta todo tan dividido q no sera fazil tanteo puntual, pero podra ser Mil Rs mas o menos, para q yo vea en lo q entro, y si puedo consumarlo prq aunq no estoy pobre ni soy miserable ay ms pobs
