Copy of a letter from Diego Díaz, an artisan, to María de los Ángeles.

The author writes María de los Ángeles to thank her for her help and for her kindness. He also asks her to tell her son, Francisco de Córdoba, to visit him in jail.

The accused in this process was Manuel Díaz, a merchant. In 1712, his cousin Gaspar Díaz denounced him to the Inquisition, accusing him to follow the law of Moses. In 1714, the Inquisition of Cuenca started a process against him, accusing him of being a judaizer. However, the process was suspended some years after, when it was demonstrated that Gaspar Díaz had denounced his cousin only because of the animosity that existed between them and because Manuel had refused to help Gaspar economically while he was in jail. Between 1707 and 1711, Gaspar Díaz had been imprisoned in the Royal Jail for coin counterfeiting, together with his brother Diego Díaz and other relatives. While they were imprisoned, they had written letters threatening to denounce various relatives if they did not send them certain sums of money. Some of these letters were joined to the proceedings as a proof of the extortions made by the two brothers.

Mi sra Da Maria no escuso el haçer estos quatro Renglones, tan siquiera para dar a Vm y a esos Señores las devidas graçias de la mucha estimaçion q haçen de esa Criatura, pues es çierto estoy tan Sumamente agradeçido, q con palabras no lo puedo explicar, ni mi corto discurso lo alcanza, mas puede Vm estar con la confianza, q en mis cortas oraçiones la encomiendo a nro sor y le pido la dé muchos dias de vida, y que vea los Señores hixos en el estado que desea, y los libre de aquello q no se pueden librar, Yá le diJe a el sor Dn Franco este dia pasado, hiçiera la quenta era su hixo, conque de esta suerte Vm sera su Aguela, aora digo a Vm q en estando mejorçito me ha de haçer el gusto embiarmelo para verlo que no hara Ystançia alguna y en el ynterin quedo Rogando a Dios nro sor me la ge ms as, a mi sra Da Ana B S M y que tambien see lo quiere mucho q Reçiva ms mems de Ana, Leonor, y Franco de el otro no lo miento, por ser quien es, y Vm tambien los Reciva, y todos los demas Señores.
