In English | Instructions letter sent by Manuel Soares to his cousin, Gaspar de Passos Figueiroa, a bishop's bailiff The author instructs his imprisoned cousin on how to act and who to blame in order to get free from the Inquisition. Gaspar de Passos Figueiroa, a bishop's bailiff, was arrested by the Inquisition under the accusation of receiving bribes from some New-Christians he was supposed to arrest, allowing them to flee instead. He was also accused of contacting his own family by letter when he was already in prison; indeed, the Inquisition prisoners were not allowed to reveal "the Saint Office's secret". |
