Letter from José Eusebio de Llano Zapata to Raimundo de Sobremonte, marquis of Sobremonte.

The author expresses his sorrow over the bad news received from Lima regarding Rosa de la Puente´s death. Likewise, he is incredulous about the inheritance conditions.

In 1770 an action against Diego Hurtado de Mendoza was brought by the Hospital de San Juan de Dios on the grounds of lack of payment of some maravedis. Diego Hurtado became indebted with the aforementioned institution after staying there, together with a black slave, due to a venereal disease. The litigation includes not only the case files with the rejoinders and surrejoinders from the involved parties, but also a bundle of letters written between 1772 and 1773. After reading the letters and the medical reports, one can glimpse the health journey this young man from Lima went through. The proceedings continued in the Real Audiencia, where its president, Raimundo de Sobremonte, marquis of Sobremonte, assumed Diego´s care and managed his material and physical well-being. Diego moved to Arcos de la Frontera and to Cadiz, where slowly recovered in the care of Nicolás de Lanuza and the religious from a convent in Cadiz. Once he slightly recovered, he decided to go back to Lima, given that his mother had passed away and his inheritance and hacienda were being handled by his sister. The epistolary trace takes us to the previous moment before embarking to America, since the management of his departure is mentioned in the letters.

Muy Señor mio La de VS de 24 de passado me ha llenado de satisfaciones por las noticias, que me comunica de su buena salud, que verdaderamte apetezco, y deseo su mas firme continuacion.

Me ha sido bien triste la Carta, que VS me incluyo (sin firma) de mi sa Da Maria Cypriana Hurtado de Mendoza. Casi se me hace increible la pobreza, en q assegura a VS murio mi sa Da Rosa de la Puente Figueroa su Madre. Con bastante dolor mio entregue a mi Paisano, D Diego, Letras tan funestas. Me ha movido a mayor compassion su orfandad, y desamparo. En medio de esto dudo q se hayan enagenado sin su licencia, y permissomiso d esa Rl Auda con vistas del Sor Pisel. y dictamen del Defensor de Menores, y Ausentes, las Casas y Fincas que quedaron por muerte del Sor D Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, su Padre a qn Yo, en mi menor edad, conoci y tuve bastante noticia de sus talentos y circunstancias.

El Interessado, con su restitucion a la Patria, averiguara sus derechos y vera a mejor luz el estado de su herencia, q no le juzgo tan deplorable, como la pondera su señora hermana. Yo, si él se porta como debe y castiga su mozedad, me insinuare con el sor Virrey fiado en el favor q le merezco para q le proporcione aquella carrera q su alta Prudencia considerasse deba emprender. No hay duda q que con el buen exemplo q VS nos a dado, tengo toda inclinacion a emprenderlo hasta donde mis pobres facultades puedan extenderse.

Incluyo a VS la ultima Gazeta de Lima, para q me la debuelva Por ella conocera el modo de Govierno de aquella Capital, y su manera en la Politica, y Civilidad. Tambien incluyo una tabla de Conclusiones theologicas, dedicadas a Nuestro Soberano, y un exemplar impresso de la Carta, q el Obispo de Panama me escribio, ahora 2 años; sobre el alto concepto, q se tiene en la Europa, de la dotes Governativas del sor Amat, mi virrey.

VS me hara el honor de perdonar esta sinceridad de mi animo, y mandar con toda satisfacioncion, a qn como Yo, desea acertar complacerle, y servirle
