Author(s) | António das Chagas |
---|---|
Addressee(s) | António Ribeiro de Abreu |
In English | Letter from Frei António das Chagas, a preacher, to an Inquisitor of Coimbra, probably António Ribeiro de Abreu. The author tells the addressee how he and his companion have been preaching in Northern Portugal. He also asks for advice regarding a case of solicitation in confession. A servant in the place of Felgueiras, in Northern Portugal, was accused of making a pact with the Devil. The witnesses who testified against her believed that she appeared to them in the company of a well dressed young man (the Devil in disguise). Later, they would forget all about it and only remember through the Catholic confession and communion. They believed to have been enchanted, made invisible and forgetful while they would have illicit sexual intercourse with other people. |
