Addressee(s) | António José Cogominho |
In English | Request letter from Luísa Maria Teresa to her brother, António José Cogominho. The author asks her brother for help so that their sister, a widow with several children, can make ends meet. António José Cogominho, a New Christian, 49 years old, a civil servant at Sabara de Minas, Brazil, was married to Joana Micaela de Sande Tórrosa. After a stay of 18 years in Brazil, allegedly without news from his wife in Portugal, he married Eufrásia Maria dos Prazeres. He was later accused of bigamy, and the court papers include three letters from Portugal, which he presented to the religious authorities when he was trying to proof that his first wife was dead. According to him, as soon as he got to know that his first wife was still alive, he left his second wife and embarked for Portugal, which he believed was a signal of how he acted in good faith. |
