Addressee(s) | Baltazar Teles |
In English | Request letter from Dom Francisco Manuel de Melo, a noble man, to Baltazar Teles, a Jesuit. The author, who is writing from Pisa in Italy, asks the addressee to use his influence in Portugal and intervene on behalf of his protégé, the letter carrier. The defendant in these proceedings was a noble man, Dom Álvaro Manuel de Noronha, who had presented himself to the Inquisition for sodomy guilt and had received an Italian exile in 1651. In 1664 he returned to Portugal with a pardon from the Pope and a letter of recommendation from Dom Francisco Manuel de Melo, an important character in the Portuguese political, military and literary history. |
