In English | Denunciation letter from Vicência do Rosário to a non identified addressee in the Inquisition of Lisbon. The author denounces Domingas Carreira, a bread cook, whom she suspects to be a witch. She retells with great detail how she wanted to buy some ashes from her in order to bleach her dirty laundry and so went to meet her twice at her house. The first time, she saw that she had a newborn girl, a baby who later died, as Vicência do Rosário would learn. The second time that she went to meet Domingas Carreira, she witnessed some witchcraft rituals celebrated by the woman, who wanted to find out who had killed her child. The Inquisition archives contain, apart from the around 40 thousand individual proceedings ("processos"), a collection of scattered charges, for which the Inquisition "Promotor" had to decide whether or not to prosecute. Complaints, confessions, letters by the commissioners or about different stages of each proceedings are some of the document types that can be found in these books. This letter has been kept among such documentation. |
