In English | Letter from Francisco Moro to Antonio José Monteiro. The author gives Antonio José Monteiro news about the probable beginning of a civil war (the First Carlist War, 1933-1940). The General Police Administration was closely monitoring the activities of foreign citizens residing in Portugal, also controlling their communications, in collaboration with the superintendent of the Posts. This letter is part of this intercepted correspondence from those Spanish military and intellectuals who, fleeing the absolutist Spain, had taken refuge in Portugal and were suspected of harbouring liberal ideas and of plotting to overthrow Fernando VII and establish a constitutional regime. This letter contains information about the moments previous to the beginning of the First Carlist War (1833-1840). The author describes the dangers to which the people was exposed, as for example the obligation for the civilians to enlist as volunteers and the threat of a new Inquisition. The author foresees the beginning of a civil war very soon. This letter was sent together with the letter PSCR 2780. |
