In English | Friendship letter from Manuel Amado Sanches, an ecclesiastical scribe, to António José Cogominho. The author tells his friend the news about his businesses and also about the country. António José Cogominho, a New Christian, 49 years old, a civil servant at Sabara de Minas, Brazil, was married to Joana Micaela de Sande Tórrosa. After a stay of 18 years in Brazil, allegedly without news from his wife in Portugal, he married Eufrásia Maria dos Prazeres. He was later accused of bigamy, and the court papers include three letters from Portugal, which he presented to the religious authorities when he was trying to proof that his first wife was dead. According to him, as soon as he got to know that his first wife was still alive, he left his second wife and embarked for Portugal, which he believed was a signal of how he acted in good faith. |
