In English | Complaint letter sent by Paulo Gomes, a merchant, to Luís Falcão, a man of law The author tells how he escaped in a haste from Aveiro to Bordeaux and complains about a judge who extorted high sums of money to protect him from the Inquisition, although he wasn't in danger after all. A judge was accused of bribery by the New Christians of Aveiro, men that he was supposed to arrest when ordered by the Inquisition to do so. He used to let them know in advance that they should flee, and received money for such service. |
