Familiar letter from Inácio José Brilhante, a marchant, to his brother Francisco Brilhante, also a marchant.

The author explains to his brother how he has decided regarding some renting of their property.

Inácio José Brilhante accused his younger brothers João Brilhante and Francisco Brilhante of stealing, in the night of April 14 1823, 41 head of cattle, 256 bovine skins, 191 sheep skins and 1,280 pounds («40 arrobas») of wool. The accused argued that the cattle was theirs and that Inácio José had only managing functions. He argued back, saying that he was the curator of the younger siblings. The letters that we find in the court's proceedings were used as proof both by the accusation and the defense. The accusation said that they were written at the time when all three were still friends, so they proved nothing. The defense found in them the proof that Inácio Brilhante was only a manager.

Ora esta serve de te dizer que vendo o grande empenho, que tu e João fazião aqui nos Assogues, e que mandandolhe eu dizer o que devião fazer para esse fim o não fizeram tomei a deliberação de falar a Joze Joaquim Ferreira para que lho fosse arematar, e Manoel Doarte para fiador a que ambos se pronteficarão, e com efeito esta efetuado o tal negocio, tres Mezes a sincoenta e sinco reis; e nove a secenta reis e isto da maneira seguinte aparesseo João Manoel furiozamente picando o Ferreira vendo isto se combinou com elle ficarem as semanas, a fim de que nem hum nem outro podesse perder muito o ganhar muito e porque dis estas são as suas vistas ex o motivo por que se combinou na forma assima dita no entanto podes avizar João para que fique serto nisto Eu amanham vou para Evora adonde espero receber noticias tuas, e ficar na serteza do teu estado e livre de cuidado em que vou pela falta das tuas noticias, e athe hoje he o que se ofresse dizerte;
