Addressee(s) | Doctor Bermúdez |
In English | Note from Isabel Bautista to doctor Bermúdez. The author complains with doctor Bermúdez the he, although a good Christian, has been bad with her, leaving her in jail and in danger for his fault. She asks him to intercede for her with the Holy Office. In 1637-1638, Isabel Bautista was accused of witchcraft and of having made a pact with the devil, and she was eventually found guilty. She had asked another inmate to write this note for doctor Bermúdez, trying to give him the fault of her imprisonment. He then gave the note to a Gypsy woman who went to sleep to the jail. This Bermúdez had previously written a letter to the Holy Office asking for the accused to be brought to an hospital, because she was old and sick. |
