Author(s) | Domingos Simões |

Addressee(s) | Manuel Lopes Carvalho |
In English | Private letter from Domingos Simões, vicar in Meãs, to Manuel Lopes Carvalho, vicar in Meãs do Campo. The author asks the recipient not to receive the bride without her showing him a discharge document. These letters are part of the process of barring Cipriano de Almeida from marrying Maria Fernandes, 45, a native of Meãs who at the time lived in Alcáçova, Montemor-o-Velho. Domingos Simões stated that, while he was in Porto two years earlier, he had lent money to Maria Fernandes and that she had promised to marry him, even passing a letter to that effect. Maria Fernandes also acknowledged the existence of this promise. Both of them resigned by mutual agreement to this commitment and the supplicant was free of condemnation. Francisco Gomes da Costa, vicar of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria de Alcáçova, in the town of Montemor-o-Velho, received the letters (one from Manuel Lopes Carvalho, vicar of Meãs, and another from Domingos Simões, supplicant of the process), and sent them to Provisor Manuel Moreira Rebelo, who had given orders to receive the bride and groom, and who then suspended this reception. |
