Author(s) | Filipa Maria |

Addressee(s) | António de Castro Ribeiro |
In English | Request letter from Filipa Maria, the daughter of an attorney, to António de Castro Ribeiro. The author asks money from the addressee in order to travel to Castelo Branco and find an uncle who will take her in. She argues that she is alone and helpless ever since her family has been arrested. The medicine doctor Manuel Soares Brandão was arrested by the Inquisition under the accusation of Judaism. He was apparently betrayed by Filipa Maria, an orphan who used to write to several Jewish people after her family was arrested, asking for money so that she could travel and join an uncle who lived far away. Her brother, a soldier, also made the same kind of requests. |
