1830. Carta de Maria José dos Anjos da Guarda e Silva para José Nicolau Teixeira de Aguiar Cresuel, caixeiro.

Author(s) Maria José dos Anjos da Guarda e Silva
Addressee(s) José Nicolau Teixeira de Aguiar Cresuel
In English

Love letter from Maria José dos Anjos da Guarda e Silva to José Nicolau Teixeira de Aguiar Cresuel, a salesman.

The author tells the addressee that, after he knew she was intending to elope, her father gave her a beating with a cane, which bruised her whole body and caused her a miscarriage. She is desolate, knows her lover will be desolate too and wants revenge.

José Nicolau Teixeira de Aguiar Cresuel was arrested under the accusation of theft and attempted murder. He used to enter the house of José Joaquim da Silva by the roof with the aid of a girl he was accused of seducing, Maria José dos Anjos da Guarda e Silva, the daughter of the plaintiff. He was apparently planning to elope with her. His father was against the match and accused José Nicolau of robbing his house and of attempting against his life and that of his son. Maria José wrote to him in jail signing with his family name, "Cresuel", and calling herself his wife.
