Letter from Fray Isidoro Acuña, a religious, to Fray Ramón Villaverde, a Franciscan religious.

The author writes to Ramón Villaverde thanking him for his letter informing him of his godchild´s death. He encourages him to face with dignity his religious life in Salamanca.

On February 15th 1834 a tumult carried out by a group of 20 or 30 Franciscans broke out in Salamanca city. They gathered at noon in a part of the city known as La Pescanta and, according to the witnesses, they indulged in several excesses involving women, insults and seditious shouting against the Isabelline monarchy. They reacted violently against the neighbours who tried to reproach their attitude, chasing them and throwing them stones. At night, they gathered in the Plaza Mayor and kept committing excesses, reaching the point of hurting an artilleryman. When the authorities tried to apprehend them, some of them resisted and tried to escape. However, they were all arrested. Among those detained were Fray Ramón Villaverde, who denied many of the charges made against him, such as the scandalous dealings with women; or Fray Ramón Veloso, who helped the latter when he tried to escape. The convents where the friars lived were searched by the authorities; seizing knives, several letters and the rapier the artilleryman was hurt with. The letters were not used in the trial since their content, eminently familiar, did not help to clarify the criminal offences. Nevertheless, one of the investigating judges decided to make a bundle of letters and add it to the rest of the proceeding documentation. The friars were condemned to various sentences. In Fray Ramón Villaverde and Fray Ramón Veloso´s case, they were sentenced to four year´s imprisonment in Ceuta, where they should serve in the hospital.

Mi apreciado Fr Ramon Villaverde: Recivi tu estimada carta de 16 del qe rige p la que me comunicabas la muerte de tu condiscipulo y Haijado mio Fr Jose Lopez que muy mucho me ha sido sensible p lo que en el ha perdido la Provincia y Religion, i yo que confiaba en sus oraciones tanto de vivo, como pa despues de muerto me consuela mucho la reflexion y casi certeza de que ya esta gozando de dios y de que en su divina presencia hara mas bien los oficios pr nosotros. Pidamos no obstante el arcano descanso pa su alma

Tan luego como ayer recivi la noticia la escribi al Sor Abd de marcon su apasionda pa que con su pruda la trasmitiera a sus buenos Padres.

Me complazco mucho en tu contento con el sto Abito. Muchisimas veces se me oyo decir que, preferia ser donado de mi ordn; a canonigo de Santo Contradiciones es preciso que las tengamos si hemos de tornar o merecer pr su medio la Corona de Gloria tu procede siempre con horradez seal qual fuere el proceder de tus commoradores ahora y siempre. En que alguna vez quieran darte en rostro llamandote gallego deves tenerlo por timbre, prque Gali-cia tiene pr armas al Santissimo Sa-cramento, y el Regimiento que lleva en nombre no rinde sus banderas en la procesion de Corpus el Reyno de Galicia es la cuna de la Grandeza España. Los castellanos que no han estado en Galicia estan persuadidos qe todos los gallegos son como los que van a la siegas y no pueden persuadirse de qe hay caballeros en Galicia. Supongo havra recivido mi contestacion a tu anterior en que verias las pruevas de mis deseos pr tus satisfacciones.
