1747. Carta del doctor Domingo Antonio de Angulo y Callejo para su tío Francisco Callejo, mercader

Letter from Domingo Antonio de Angulo y Callejo to his uncle Francisco Callejo, a trader.

The author asks his uncle to make the effort to raise the money for his University graduation, for it is expensive and he cannot afford it.

In May 1751, Domingo Antonio de Angulo y Callejo initiated a litigation against Antonio Merino, a canon from the collegiate church of Toro. Antonio Merino had been the administrator of the profits in the vicinity since 1735, and Domingo Angulo y Callejo asked to be updated of the profits and loss accounts ever since. Antonio Merino stated that the output had always been handed over to Domingo´s uncle, Francisco Callejo, who had managed the student´s maintenance during his University studies and before it. Given that Francisco Callejo had passed away, it was his widow, María Antonia de Castro, who faced her nephew´s claim. The money claimed totalled 12900 reals due to the discrepancies between the profits and what was handed over to the rightful beneficiary. María Antonia de Castro argued that her husband not only had borne (together with his brother) all of Domingo´s expenses during his whole education but also had paid for the licence that allowed the plaintiff the ownership of the profits. In order to prove the truth of what she asserted and her husband´s periodical money deliveries, she presented several receipts and twelve letters before the court. Despite the widow and the administrator´s allegations the court ruled in favour of Domingo de Angulo y Callejo, who had to be compensated by the defendants, although he had to bear the legal costs.

Tio y sor por mano del Criado de mi Collegial Beltran avise a Vm de como el señor Castillo me avia entregado los 114 rrs importe de las misas, Y juntamente El estado de nro pleito el que todavia se esta asi a Causa de no averse nombrado Retor de la Universidad de que estoy a la mira pa no dejarlo de la mano.

Tambien avise a vm de Como abia echado mis funziones en el Collo para pasar a graduarme a la Universidad y de Como el Collegio me avia dado lizenzia para pasar respecto de averseme aprobado los exerzizios por todos;lo que no puedo azer pues io como Vm save no tengo ni e tenido mas que lo que vm spre me a dado;en cuia suposizion le pido a Vm mas que pr Dios el que se esfuerze a darme el dinero para graduarme en todo este mes proximo de Mayo o principios de Junio; advirtiendo a Vm que su Coste sera de 50 a 60 Doblones y en fin d esto mejor le informara a Vm el sor Cabero quien en llegando el caso puede correr con todo ello pues se io lo ara por Vm

Tambien advierto a Vm el que mi Veca Importa ia lo caido mas que lo que cuesta el graduarme conque luego que io me gradue se lleba una zertificazon del Collegio en virtud de la qual dan el importe el que perzibira Vm como todo lo demas que fuese caiendo asta los ocho as que nos dan por porzion, esto supuesto pido a vm por Dios lo aga pues ba mi Credito Y el de Vm en lo contrario pues aqui bien saven que io no tengo mas que lo que vm me da.

espero respuesta de todo sin perder dia como ordenes de su mr agrado interin quedo pidiendo a nro sor me le ge ms y felizes as para mi amparo y Consuelo en compañia de mi sra tia Alcala y Abril 26 de 1747.
