After the liberal revolution in Portugal, the state centralized the Art education by merging the teaching of Fine Arts and of Mechanic Arts. The Lisbon National Academy of Fine Arts was founded in this context in 1836 and was inaugurated in the following year. It occupied the building of the extinct Monastery of São Francisco, where a library of thousands of volumes was also available. Although its history was obviously made of changes, the Academy maintained a strong cultural, pedagogical and honorific vocation. Besides forming new artists, the Academy always gave scholarships and prizes and saw to the publication of reference works.

The documentation that we publish from its archival funds belong to a donation made in 1902 by António TomásPires (1850-1913), an ethnographer, writer, politician, and member of the National Monuments committee. He assembled documents from the 16th to the 19th century, among which many private and family letters.

Meu amo e meu snr todo das minhas mayorez estimaçõez, comsigo agora por meyo das letras de VS Illma o gosto q não pude alcançar em cinco mezes q estive na Cor-te despoiz do terremoto, q por maiz diligenciaz q fizece pa ter a honra de comprementar a VS Illma pela distan-cia e confuzão da Corte me não foi possivel conseguilo, e cheyo de prazer e alegria sey estimar q toda a familia de VS Illma livrasse e com bom sucesso, este mes-mo lhe dezejo em todaz as suaz accoenz pa eu ter a gloria de ver premiado as suaz destintaz vertudes, e o seu grande merito.

No q VS Illma me toca hé couza q tal ja me não lembrava, porq nunca fiz assento de semelhantez miudezaz, principalmente com pessoa tam destinta, e tanto da minha veneração, e asim estou pelo q VS Illma diz, e fica isso totalmte ao seu arbitrio, e pa a conciencia ficar salva mutuamte noz conformamoz nessa parcela, e pa VS Illma não ter o emcomodo de ma remeter eu lá a mandarei receber com carta minha.

E se neste interino Governo em q es-tou neste Bizpado tiver couza em q lhe possa dar gozto, hei de estimar ter occazioenz de servir a Pessoa de VS Illma Q Ds Ge m a. Porto 25 de Setro de 1756
