As cartas foram apreendidas e nelas se insinuavam projetos de atentar contra a vida de Francisco Ferreira, o que, de facto, aconteceu: o irmão da ré, identificado como «marujo», atacou o cunhado com «huma estocada, ou punhalada, deixando-o por morto». No entanto, Francisco Ferreira escapou do que durante muito tempo se considerou ser uma «ferida mortal». Gertrudes Rosa da Conceição was accused of commiting adultery with António José Ferreira, a salesman that worked for her husband, Francisco Ferreira, a grocer. She used to receive her lover in her room while her husband was away on business and this was witnessed by her servants. Even after the lovers were both in prison, they continued to exchange letters, in which there were signs of an arrangement to kill the husband. In fact, Gertrudes' brother, known as the «sailor», did hurt his brother-in-law with a dagger, but, in spite of the serious wounds, Francisco Ferreira survived. Gertrudes ended up acquitted from this accusation, for there was not enough evidence against her.

Quando il marito si trovava fuori di casa (testimoniarono i servi), Gertrudes accoglieva nella sua stanza, António José Ferreira, tesoriere del marito. Come segnale di presenza, António José Ferreira lanciava una moneta contro la finestra, e così Gertrudes gli apriva la porta che dava sull’entrata dell’ufficio. Le lettere scambiate tra i due amanti erano consegnate da un giovane corriere di missive, il quale venne picchiato da António José Ferreira non appena si diffusero le prime dicerie sul crimine. Il giorno di Carnevale, Gertrudes mandò tutta la famiglia ed i servi alla casa di un vicino per poter ricevere il suo amante. Putroppo però, una delle serve ebbe la necessità di tornare a casa e li trovò intenti in «azioni indecenti». Persino dopo essere stati imprigionati, Gertrudes e António José continuarono a scambiarsi la corrispondenza nel carcere di Limoeiro. Le lettere furono sequestrate e in esse vennero riscontrati piani per attentare alla vita di Francisco Ferreira, cosa, che di fatto avvene: il fratello della rea, conosciuto come «marujo», attaccò il cognato con «una stoccata, o pugnalata, lasciandolo per morto». Tuttavia, Francisco Ferreira riuscì a sopravvivere a ciò che per molto tempo fu considerata una «ferita mortale». Si sa dal processo, che la rea fu assolta per mancanza di prove sufficienti e si suppose che tutto venne ordito dal marito.

La scorsa notte sono giunte qui sotto sedici donne così smarrite che era uno strazio. Non si può affatto dormire. Sono stata tutta la notte come adesso.Riguardo al fatto di chiedere misericordia, che VE mi dice: è al Diavolo, che lo devo chiedere! Se Egli é un uomo privo di religione, come potrebbe avere pena di noi, se egli ha fatto questo per vendicarsi di VE...perché è stato Tomás a ripetergli ciò che VE aveva detto di me a lui, nella bottega, dato che sempre Tomás viveva nel dubbio che io parlassi ai miei parenti.

È stato qua ieri Francisco das Muralhas do Carmo e mi ha detto che Egli è un uomo molto cattivo, che nessuno si capacita di ciò e che si vede perfettamente che tutto questo è dovuto alla sua falsità, e che è così testardo che non vuole altro se non che vada in convento. E dice che là mi darebbe tutto e che qua non mi vuole dare niente. Io ho già detto che non voglio andare in convento. Si trova qui ora suo fratello: mi ha detto che ha messo là la figlia, che non è più in casa con lui. E mi ha detto che sarebbe meglio che io andassi in convento, che sarebbe stato meglio perché altrimenti rischiavo di incorrere in una sentenza. Gli ho detto che ora avevo aperto gli occhi, che non avevo più paura, perché si trovava qua una che non stava più con il marito, in quanto se ne era scappata nove mesi fa, per poi essere imprigionata, a cui era capitato di finire cinque anni a Castro Marinho, identica cosa che mi aspettavo per me, quale forma di retribuzione che egli mi avrebbe fornito. Perciò non gli voglio chiedere nulla, perché non voglio che dica che sono complice. Sebbene io sia molto scoraggiata, non lo mostro alle persone che lui conosce, perché mi lamento sempre molto di lui.
