O réu, acusado de roubo, disse ter alugado uma cavalgadura a um almocreve (cuja alcunha era 'O Bexiga de Évora'), que passou por ele a caminho de Salvaterra de Magos, local onde se encontrava preso. Ao chegarem a essa terra, quiseram prender o almocreve, mas ele acabou por fugir, não sem antes ter indicado o réu como seu cúmplice no roubo das cavalgaduras. Gregório José Calisto foi condenado às galés por quatro anos, mas contestou e recorreu da sentença por não haver acusação formal contra ele. Foi então condenado a 5 anos de degredo, mas entretanto o lesado retirou a queixa. Na carta, Gregório José Calisto escreveu ao seu ex-patrão para que dissesse que continuava a tê-lo ao seu serviço, a fim de o antigo criado conseguir maior credibilidade junto da Intendência da Polícia.

Gregório José Calisto, servant, was accused of robbing a beast and condemned to 5 years in exile, but later the beast owner withdrew the complaint. On my way from Palmela to the Virtues around here, I found a muleteer who brought with him two unloaded beasts. I had come to get a bit of smuggling and I was on foot. And I spoke to this muleteer, rented him one of his mules and climbed it up.

As we reached the village of Salvaterra, they wanted to arrest the muleteer and he ran away. And I was beaten and arrested. And now they won't release me without the Superintendent's order.
