Após a morte de D. João VI (abril de 1826), D. Pedro outorgou a Carta Constitucional, iniciando-se um curto ciclo político liberal denominado Primeiro Cartismo (1826-1828). A situação política e militar interna era muito confusa, com a proliferação de grupos e fações, sucessivas remodelações governamentais e várias ações militares. Poucos dias depois do juramento da carta (31 de julho de 1826), tiveram início várias revoltas anticartistas, entre elas as que foram desencadeadas no Alentejo sob a liderança do Brigadeiro Magessi, que invadiu o território português a partir de Espanha e que contou com vários apoios locais. Tais apoios receberam a designação de «rebeldes espanhóis», que surge nestes documentos e se reporta a esses insurretos anticartistas, portugueses, que operavam a partir de Espanha. Este processo foi movido a Agostinho Figueira por suspeita de colaboração com os ditos "rebeldes espanhóis", nomeadamente com o Capitão do Regimento da Infantaria 17, José Guilherme, em conluio com Joaquim da Silva Zagalo, sargento do Regimento de Milícias de Vila Viçosa. A acusação baseou-se no facto de, na correspondência envolvendo os três indivíduos, se usarem pseudónimos nas fórmulas de endereço, estratégias de assinatura anónima, e caligrafia disfarçada. No processo faz-se referência a editais proibindo a correspondência com os anticartistas.

After D. João VI died (April 1826), D. Pedro approved a Constitution that was opposed by many rebels, and there was a growing political and military turmoil: several rebellions took place in different parts of the country and a group of Spaniards even took action in Alentejo, with support from local Portuguese inhabitants. The expression «Spanish rebels» refers to these men that took action against the new law. In these proceedings, Agostinho Figueira, one Portuguese local, was accused of supporting these «Spanish rebels», together with two other Portuguese military. In the letters they wrote to each other, they used pseudonyms and a disguised calligraphy.
