Esta carta não está diretamente envolvida nos factos relevantes deste processo, mas encontra-se nele incluída por ser uma das que D. Maria Antónia do Amaral ditou ao seu afilhado. Este afilhado, rapaz instruído, terá desempenhado um papel crucial na identificação da letra de um padre num bilhete manuscrito usado nos atos de feitiçaria por ela delatados.

Este caderno contém várias denúncias, entre elas a de D. Maria Antónia do Amaral. Esta senhora, bem como sua irmã D. Joana Pais do Amaral e sua cunhada Jacinta de Sousa, moradoras na Vila de S. Sebastião de Guimarães, delataram ao Tribunal do Santo ofício um vizinho, de nome Manuel Martins, da freguesia de S. Vicente de Moscotelos, por mandar fazer feitiços para matar Diogo Ferreira Cabral, cavaleiro professo da Ordem de Cristo. Diogo Cabral era casado com uma sobrinha das ditas irmãs delatoras e morava em casa delas. As duas alegam que o delatado se gabava de que Diogo Ferreira não havia de vencer os pleitos, nem de lograr as fazendas, nem seus filhos. Que o pai do delatado já teria feito ou mandado fazer o mesmo a um irmão e a um sobrinho das delatoras e que esses tinham morrido. E achando-se depois bonecos ("monecuos") em diferentes lugares, um em cima de um tabuleiro onde o dito Diogo Ferreira Cabral se costumava sentar e do qual saía pálido como um defunto, outro metido nas paredes das casas e outro na quinta das delatoras, todos tinham a mesma forma e traziam por dentro uns globos pequenos de camurça. Durante seis ou sete meses, Diogo Cabral padeceu de grande "sufocação" que não o deixava dormir e só depois de muitos remédios é que melhorou. Depois de aparecer o primeiro boneco e de este ter sido queimado, adoeceu novamente e com ele também o seu filho mais velho. Sofriam do estômago e não queriam ser exorcizados. Quando se achou o terceiro boneco, o qual tinha um osso de defunto por dentro com unguentos mal cheirosos embrulhados num papel com responsos de defuntos escritos em latim, D. Maria Antónia do Amaral desconfiou que fosse obra do delatado porque o tal rapaz seu afilhado (que escrevia algumas cartas dela, como a que se apresenta transcrita) reconheceu a letra como sendo do padre Luís António de Abreu, da mesma freguesia do dito Manuel Martins.

Dentro do fundo do Tribunal do Santo Ofício existem as coleções de Cadernos do Promotor das inquisições de Lisboa, Évora e Coimbra. O seu âmbito é principalmente o da recolha de acusações de heresia. A partir de tais acusações, o promotor do Santo Ofício decidia proceder ou não a mais diligências, no sentido de mover processos a alguns dos acusados. Denúncias, confissões, cartas de comissários e familiares e instrução de processos são algumas das tipologias documentais que se podem encontrar nestes Cadernos. Quanto ao crime nefando e à solicitação, são culpas que não estão normalmente referidas nestes livros.

Dictated letter from Maria Antónia do Amaral to a friend of hers.

The author gives her friend some news from her family and her godchildren.

This letter is not directly involved in the facts that are relevant for this process, but is included in it because it is one of those that D. Maria Antónia has dictated to her godson. This godson, who is educated, has played a crucial role in identifying the calligraphy of Luís António de Abreu, a priest of the same parish as the defendant, on a handwritten paper used in the witchcraft acts that she reported. According to her, the author of these acts is Manuel Martins, who allegedly tried to kill Diogo Ferreira Cabral. The Inquisition archives contain, apart from the around 40 thousand individual proceedings ("processos"), a collection of scattered charges, for which the Inquisition "Promotor" had to decide whether or not to prosecute. Complaints, confessions, letters by the commissioners or about different stages of each proceedings are some of the document types that can be found in these books. This letter has been kept among such documentation.

My goddaughter Joana is feeling better from her sickness, she's at your feet and of all those ladies, and the same does Caetana, and the mother Isabel is at your feet and of those of Ms. Arcângela and Ms. Teresa, and she misses them a lot. The brides of my godfather, Jerónimo de Almeida, have already been received. You have told me to ask what had happened to my godson António and to his prayer. I'm not sure whether he will do it or not, because I sent him to study to be a clergyman, but he didn't show any interest in learning, so I have sent him to be a merchant. Now I have at home another godson, who is the one that writes these letters for me. This one has no other vocation but to be a priest, for he learns for this purpose.
