Manuel Ventura de Alarcón (en algunas partes del proceso también se le llama Manuel Fernández) se casó en 1664 con Catalina Molano en Horcajo, villa de la que Manuel es natural. Allí hizo un año de vida maritable con su esposa y después desapareció. Catalina no volvió a tener noticias de él hasta que tuvo el aviso de que estaba en Granada y de que se había casado con otra mujer. Esta noticia se la dió un vecino, Francisco Romero, que dijo que le había visto en uno de los caminos de Santa Fe (Granada) junto a otro hombre del pueblo. Dicho vecino dice que les instó para que volvieran, a lo que el otro hombre accedió, pero no Manuel que se negó a regresar junto a su esposa. Catalina denunció los hechos a la Inquisición para que se abrieran diligencias. La Inquisición averiguó que Manuel Ventura se fue a trabajar a Granada y allí estuvo viviendo unos 9 o 10 años, primero trabajando como labrador y luego como mesonero. Allí se dice que se ha casado con una mujer, Beatriz Gutiérrez, y que ha tenido hijos con ella. La carta aportada al proceso es encontrada en la incautación de bienes que se le hace a Manuel y se adjunta como prueba al caso. Manuel, finalmente, es castigado por la Inquisición por estos hechos a azotes y exposición pública por bígamo.

Letter from Manuel Ventura de Alarcón to Baltasar Hernández

The author writes to Baltasar Hernández to inform and instruct him about how to act. He warns him that he is going to be arrested and give him several advises.

In 1664 Manuel Ventura de Alarcón (also Manuel Fernández in some parts of the trial documentation), native to Horjaco, got married to Catalina Molano. He lived there with his wife for a year and then disappeared. Catalina Molano only had news from him when she learnt he remarried and was living in Granada. The informant was Francisco Romero, a neighbour who saw him with another man from the village on the way to Santa Fe (Granada). The aforementioned neighbour urged them to go back, but only Manuel´s accompanying agreed to do so, whilst Manuel himself refused to return to his wife. Catalina denounced the facts to the Holy Office and the inquiries proved that Manuel Ventura had moved to Granada to work as a farmer and then as an innkeeper. He spent 9 to 10 years in Granada, where he got married to Beatriz Gutiérrez and had to children. The letter provided to the trial documentation as proof was seized to Manuel, who was eventually scourged and publicly exposed for bigamy by the Holy Office.
