[1720-1729]. Carta de [frei António das Chagas] para [António Ribeiro de Abreu], mestre e Inquisidor.

Author(s) António das Chagas
Addressee(s) António Ribeiro de Abreu
In English

Justification letter from a priest, probably friar António das Chagas, to an Inquisitor of Coimbra, probably António Ribeiro de Abreu.

The author explains to the addressee that it would arise suspicions if he went back to a place where he had been recently. Local people would easily suspect that he had been revealing some secrets that he heard in confession. The issue seems to be connected to the misbehaviour of priests.

A servant in the place of Felgueiras, in Northern Portugal, was accused of making a pact with the Devil. The witnesses who testified against her believed that she appeared to them in the company of a well dressed young man (the Devil in disguise). Later, they would forget all about it and only remember through the Catholic confession and communion. They believed to have been enchanted, made invisible and forgetful while they would have illicit sexual intercourse with other people.
