1560. Carta de Mateo de Osuna para su tío Baltasar García.

Author(s) Mateo de Osuna
Addressee(s) Baltasar García
In English

Letter from Mateo de Osuna to his uncle Baltasar García.

The author assures his uncle that there are no offense taken for not being the chosen one to keep the clerk´s shop and he regrets he has heard otherwise.

Mateo de Osuna claimed the office of the clerk of the cabildo of Santo Domingo. This office had been granted to García de Paredes, who had left it in charge of Jerónimo Ruiz. Mateo de Osuna argued that the latter had left the office to him and that his uncle, Baltasar García, was aware of it, that´s way he took part in the litigation. However, Baltasar García´s version contradicted Mateo´s. Baltasar had taken Mateo under his wing and took him everywhere he had been sent: France, Flanders and the Indies. In regards of the office of the clerk, he considered he had no responsibility; besides, he presented a letter to the Council in which Mateo de Osuna assured it was necessary to look for a better candidate to that office.
