In English | Denunciation letter from friar Francisco da Assunção to Tomé Lopes Negrão, an ecclesiastical rector. The author tells his friend the addressee some cases he testified personally in Oporto and that could justify an enquiry by the Inquisition: a priest who said some heretical propositions in a sermon, a private library with forbidden books, and a young man that said mass in spite of his lack of ordinance. The Inquisition archives contain, apart from the around 40 thousand individual proceedings ("processos"), a collection of scattered charges, for which the Inquisition "Promotor" had to decide whether or not to prosecute. Complaints, confessions, letters by the commissioners or about different stages of each proceedings are some of the document types that can be found in these books. This letter has been kept among such documentation. |
