Author(s) | Teresa Maria de Jesus |
---|---|
Addressee(s) | Ana Maria Teresa de Jesus |
In English | Private letter from Teresa Vicência de Jesus Maria, pseudonym of Teresa Maria de Jesus, to Ana Maria Teresa de Jesus. The author advises the recipient not to trust the devil, she tells her about the love of God and says she prays for her. The defendant in this process is the young Teresa Maria de Jesus, also known as Teresa Vicência de Jesus Maria, arrested by the Inquisition in November 6, 1738, for she pretended to have visions and revelations. Seven of her letters written to two nuns are included in the process, as evidence of her guilt. She was condemned to be publicly flogged and to spend five years in Évora, and also forbidden of ever going back to Porto, Braga or Viana do Castelo. |
