In English | Unsigned letter written by Francisca Vázquez and sent to his son Alonso de Vera. The author asks his son Alonso de Vera to inform him about his situation in Mexico and gives him the latest news from Spain. The defendant of this process was Asensio López, from Belmonte (Cuenca), innkeeper in la Venta Nueva. He was accused of the crime of bigamy for having contracted two marriages: firstly, he had married Catalina López, with whom he had three children, in Belmonte, and later he had married Juana Quintero in La Puebla de los Ángeles (Mexico), with whom he had children too. In order to get married the second time, he claimed that his first wife had died, presenting false documents. Captain Francisco Ramírez, from Belmonte, a friend of the family of the first wife of Asensio López who lived in Mexico, urged him to return to Spain and take care of his wife and children, but he did not obey. The defendant was sentenced to a hundred lashes and to pay six hundred golden pesos. |
