Addressee(s) | Francisco Luís |
In English | Request letter sent by António de Castro Pinto, a surgeon, to Francisco Luís, a deacon The author says he regrets his behavior and asks the addressee to punish him in a covert way only, so that his family won't suffer. He blames others for the idea of making fun of the New-Christians by terrifying them with the menace of the Inquisition. A group of individuals, a surgeon (the author of these letters), a judge, a carter and a farmer persecuted the New-Christians of Argozelo and seized their property disguised as Inquisition officials. The judge defended himself by accusing the surgeon, whose five letters were used by the Inquisition to build a case on him. |
