1737. Carta de Teresa Vicência de Jesus Maria, pseudónimo de Teresa Maria de Jesus, para Ana Maria Teresa de Jesus.

Author(s) Teresa Maria de Jesus
Addressee(s) Ana Maria Teresa de Jesus
In English

Private letter from Teresa Vicência de Jesus Maria, pseudonym of Teresa Maria de Jesus, to Ana Maria Teresa de Jesus.

The author asks the recipient for news, from her and her nephew who was in jail, and tells her that she is sick.

The defendant in this process is the young Teresa Maria de Jesus, also known as Teresa Vicência de Jesus Maria, arrested by the Inquisition in November 6, 1738, for she pretended to have visions and revelations. Seven of her letters written to two nuns are included in the process, as evidence of her guilt. She was condemned to be publicly flogged and to spend five years in Évora, and also forbidden of ever going back to Porto, Braga or Viana do Castelo.
