In English | Family letter from Manuel Ferreira, priest, to his cousin, Luísa Ferreira. The author tells his cousin that her sister's first husband is still alive and is a fisherman. Maria Ferreira, an Old-Christian, 50, was condemned for bigamy because she married twice while her first husband was still alive. It was her brother-in-law that, together with his wife, Luís Ferreira, Maria's sister, accused her to the Inquisition, after Manuel Ferreira, a priest and cousin of the two women, confirmed that João André, the defendant's first husband, was working as a fisherman in Sertã. Maria was arrested on June 21, 1673, and sentenced to be publicly whipped, besides seven years of exile in Brazil and some other punishments. |
