1732. Carta de José de Mena, franciscano descalzo, para Francisca Obies.

Author(s) José de Mena
Addressee(s) Francisca Obies
In English

Letter from José de Mena, a discalced Franciscan, to Francisca Obies.

The author writes Francisca Obies to express his sorrow for having harmed the husband of the addressee with what he said the previous day. He apologises and he tells her that he will amend what he said, clarifying his words.

In 1740, Juan de Langlois, the husband of Francisca Obies, was accused of being a judaizer. Some years before, José de Mena, a discalced Franciscan, met a Frenchman (the accused) who was very devoted to the Stations of the Cross, and who had paid for a cross. It seems that this man had been a Lutheran heretic who had converted. José de Mena, during a sermon, told this story, claiming that this man he had been a Lutheran who had converted. However, someone told José de Mena that his words could be very dangerous for Juan de Langlois. José de Mena apologises for it, both in this letter he sent to Francisca Obies and during a sermon he made the following Friday, claiming that he did not want to harm anybody with his words.
