[1601]. Bilhete de [Ana Fernandes], para [Pêro de Matos], advogado.

Author(s) Ana Fernandes
Addressee(s) Pêro de Matos
In English

Note from [Ana Fernandes] to [Pêro de Matos], lawyer.

The author confides what she has been doing before the inquisitors.

Ana Fernandes and her sons, Diogo Rodrigues and Brás Rodrigues, new christians from Torre de Moncorvo, were arrested by the Inquisition. Since they were not taken at the same time to the jail in Coimbra, Diogo Rodrigues was seriously concerned with his mother. Both files contain notes that mother and son wrote to and about each other, volating the prison secrecy. To reduce the risk of being caught, they used small pieces of paper that had wrapped some supplies, then hiding their messages inside certain foods and cooking utensils. Some of these messages would eventually be intercepted by the mayor and the guards.
