In English | Complaint letter from António Joaquim Teles, probably an overseer, to João Paulo Fabre Teixeira Silva, a nobleman and the author's master. The author complaints about all the problems created by the Justice because of the imprisonment of a woman, a servant of the addressee. He tells what he already did to solve the problems (the arrest of the addressee's assets) and what the addressee should do himself. The defendants in these proceedings were Maria Isabel Barreto de Pina and Gertrudes Magna, both accused of stealing in the house of the Counselor José da Cunha Filhado, who had passed away. The complaint was presented by Gertrudes Caetana Fialho, sister of the deceased and married to João Paulo Fabre Teixeira da Silva. Due to the lack of evidence, the defendants were considered not guilty, but the complainant contested the decision. The defense argued that the letters presented as proof of guilt had no value, since most of they didn’t even have stamps. Some of the letters were believed to have been written by the complainant’s acquaintances or by herself, Gertrudes Fialho. The proceedings contain a petition signed by the people of Torres Vedras, on the defendants' behalf. |
