Letter from Félix Pérez on behalf of Antonio Puertas to his mother, Melchora Martínez.

The author confesses to his mother he has taken part in several thefts, he accuses other accomplices of having objects belonging to him and he denies having taken part in other similar crimes.

In 1780, Jerónimo Toboso, the alguacil mayor of the Valladolid Royal Chancery, opened a proceeding against Antonio Puertas and Domingo Gómez. These two men were frequently seen in the public square without working. Therefore, they were looked for and their houses were searched. They found stolen objects and an inquire began. Clara Muñoz declared that Antonio Puertas had been at her house and stole a small chest with chocolates and some cotton skeins. Also Manuel de Entuna declared that Antonio Puertas had stolen certain sums of money from him. He was also accused of stealing some jewellery from his mother, Melchora Martínez. The proceeding continued by inquiring persons close to Antonio Puertas in order to decide on whether he was guilty of loiter with intent. The proceeding documentation is in bad state and possibly incomplete.

Mi mas apreziabe Madre: a Juan Galleguin, y a Manuel Pagarote declare, haver robado, y por donde; por lo que infiero que las alajas que a Vm la faltan las pueden tener estos, pues tambn les manifeste haver entrado por la Casa de la Paredes, y me bage atado por la Chiminea de la Casa de Vm Y asimismo la digo, como Domingo Gomez, preso por la misma causa, me ha dho en esta Carcel, que en Casa de mi Hermo Franco y en una Arca tenia este ocultas unas prendas de Vm Que es cuanto puedo significar a Vm, con el anelo de que se reintege de ellas confiado igualmte qe el amor natural la movera a piedad, y a que mire por este pobe y afligdo Hijo; que supca a No sr me ge la vida de Vm los as qe puede Valladolid 17 de Mayo de 1780

Haviendo premeditado qe puede conducir a beneficio de Vm sobe las proptas qe me han hecho los relacionados anteriormente a excepcion de mi Hermo; la Oigo como estos, me han solicitdo pa hacer varios Robos en esta Ciudad, a que no he querido condescender y les decia, que yo no queria robar a otro mas que a Vm; pero hago memoria, qe hace como tres meses intentaron robar en una Casa junto a Sn Blas, a que tampoco quise concurrir; por lo que ignoro si lo egecutaron, o no
