In English

Letter from Juan de Uriarte, a student, to Josefa Cordal.

The author explains to Josefa Cordal that he cannot pay what he owes her yet.

Following an accusation of rape, a litigation occurred in 1694. Antolín Vitoria, a resident of Boecillo (Valladolid), accused Juan de Uriarte of raping and impregnating his daughter Manuela Vitoria. All the defendant´s assets were seized and remained in the possession of Pedro Pérez, a shepherd. These assets were: 19 rams, a shotgun and several pieces of jewellery. Manuela Vitoria gave birth a baby girl who was raised by Josefa Cordal in exchange of 25 reals per month. Domingo de Lorra, a relative and a friend of Juan Uriarte, took charge of the payment for the first two months, however, he stopped paying arguing he was not receiving the money from the child´s father. After seven months of delay in the payments, Francisco Aldanueva, Josefa Cordal´s husband, claimed a part of the assets seized to Juan Uriarte to be able to support the girl. In this letter Juan de Uriarte apologises to Josefa Cordal for not being able to pay the money he owes her.
